Creating an experimentation engine from a one-time redesign
Petco POS Donation Redesign
Petco Love is a nonprofit organization whose lifesaving work is supported in part by donations made by Petco shoppers at checkout. As Petco upgraded its point-of-sale terminals, we had an opportunity to rethink how that donation experience showed up for customers.
Head of Product: Aaron Klein
Digital Product Manager: Jessica Remitz
Product Designer: Abbey Price
My Role
I led the product work from concept through launch, partnering across Petco Love and Petco's digital teams.
I was responsible for:
Evaluating and shaping POS design concepts
Designing and running usability testing
Translating test results into actionable product insights
Aligning stakeholders across both organizations around the experience
The Problem
The existing donation screen was outdated, visually limited, and disconnected from Petco Love's new brand identity.
More importantly, it didn't give customers a clear reason to donate or help them understand how their contribution supported animals.
We needed to create a more compelling experience—within the constraints of the POS platform, multiple levels of organizational approval, and a limited library of available creative.
The Approach
We adopted a test, iterate, repeat approach.
Rather than choosing a single design and shipping it, we tested combinations of imagery, messaging, button treatments, and calls to action. We explored everything from animal photography and seasonal creative to promotional giveaways and variations of “decline” and “skip” language.
Testing revealed an important insight: customers wanted to understand where their money was going and how it would help animals.
That insight shaped the experience and gave us a stronger framework for future POS creative decisions.
The Outcome
The project became more than a redesign—it established a foundation for ongoing experimentation across Petco's POS experience.
The team gained a repeatable approach for testing and updating donation creative, making it possible to introduce seasonal campaigns, organizational priorities, and customer giveaways without treating every update as a new product project.
Instead of a static donation screen, we created a flexible experimentation framework that could evolve with the organization and its customers.
